How To Obtain Your Driving Record

To get a copy of your driving record, you must have one of the following:

  • DC driver's license, learner's permit, or non-driver's ID card, which has not been expired for more than five years
  • Driver's license, learner's permit, or non-driver's ID issued by another US state or jurisdiction, which has not been expired for more than one year
  • US passport, which has not been expired for more than one year
  • Current US military or military dependent ID card
  • Current ID card issued by a US federal, state, or territory government agency, showing date of birth
  • Current INS documents (employment, travel, etc.)
  • Foreign passport with attached non-immigrant visa form I-94 with certain certifications

If you do not have any of the above, you must have two of the following, with one of the documents bearing your date of birth.

  • State-certified US birth certificate or birth registration card
  • Social Security card bearing applicant's signature
  • Certified copy of school records issued by a US jurisdiction or territory
  • Current form IAP66 (Extension for Exchange Visitor Status)
  • US Selective Service card
  • Health insurance card or policy stating applicant's full name, date of birth, and Social Security number
  • Valid college or university ID with photo
  • Marriage certificate
  • US military discharge papers (DD-214)

Be sure to include your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license number, photocopy of your ID, and a check or money order for the driver's record fees. You will receive a copy of your driving record within 14 business days.

Driver's Record

You may request a certified copy of your 3-, 5-, or 10-year driver's record by mail or in person at a designated DC DMV service location. To protect the privacy of individuals, DMV does not provide driver's record information over the telephone.

Bring or enclose documentation of your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license number (if it differs from your Social Security number), a photocopy of your proof of identification, and a check or money order payable to DC Treasurer.  Driver's record fees are determined based on the report requested. You will receive a copy of your driving record immediately if in person or within 14 business days if by mail.
